Among those who sought to “even the score” was Frank and Jesse James from Clay County, Missouri. Over a fifteen year period beginning in 1868, they held up 12 banks, 7 trains, and 5 stagecoaches in 11 states and territories. Wanted posters were plastered all over the mid-west offering a $5000 reward, dead or alive. Although it seemed like evry sheriff, posse and pinkerton were after the James gang, Jesse himself was becoming a folk hero, “robbing the rich and giving to the poor.” When he was gunned down in his home by Robert Ford, a trusted member of his gang, his death was wildy mourned with newspaper headlines reading “Goodbye Jesse!.” This song was composed shortly after his death by Billy Garshade, from the Crack Neck section of Clay County and remains the most famous outlaw song.

Shaw was an officer in the Federal Army during the American Civil War who volunteered to lead the first company of black soldiers. Shaw was forced to deal with the prejudices of both the enemy (who had orders to kill commanding officers of blacks), and of his own fellow officers.
