LYRICS of “Irish-American soldiers of Civil War” Song: Oh, not now for songs of a nation’s wrongs, not the groans of starving labor; Let the rifle ring and the bullet sing to the clash of the flashing sabre! There are Irish ranks on the tented banks of Columbia’s guarded ocean; And an iron clank from flank to flank tells of armed men in motion. And frank souls there clear true and bare To all, as the steel beside them, Can love or hate withe the strength of fate, Till the grave of the valiant hide them. Each seems to be mailed Ard Righ, whose sword’s avenging glory Must light the fight and smite for right, Like Brian’s in olden story. With pale affright and panic flight Shall dastard Yankees base and hollow, Hear a Celtic race, from their battle place, Charge to the shout of “Faugh-a-ballaugh!” By the sould above, by the land we love Her tears bleeding patience The sledge is wrought that shall smash to naught The brazen liar of nations. The Irish green shall again be seen as our Irish fathers bore it, A burning wind from the South behind, and the Yankee rout before it! O’Neil’s red hand shall purge the land- Rain a fire on men and cattle, Till the Lincoln snakes in their own cold lakes Plunge from the blaze of battle. The knaves that rest on Columbia’s breast, and the voice of true men stifle; we’ll exorcise from the rescued prize- Our talisman, the rifle; For a tyrant’s life a bowie knife!- Of Union knot dissolvers, The best we ken are stalwart men, Columbiads and

    The Irish distinguished themselves fighting for both the Union and CSA. Union Irish (Catholic)were from New York and joined up because they had no other way to feed themselves. CSA Irish were 90% Scots-Irish (North Ireland roots). They were the “Rednecks” who worked in the sun all day but were too fair-skinned to tan. They didn’t own slaves or care about slavery. The Rednecks were fighting to repell the Union’s invasion of the CSA. In the South the Secession was generally understood to be legal.

    @jast73
    I was born and still live in Orange County in Southern California. It would suit me just fine to not have to put up with the rest of the country and the desire so many have to move here and ruin the place I love. I say close the boarders to any american who wants to move here. And just what have the other states done to help California with the problems here…nothing. So what’s your problem.
    I’m proud of my Irish ethnicity.

    @UAShortround I may be a Union soldier but I’d gladly listen to the southern music more.

    I wish the red states could secede from the blue ones. Let Cali and NY deal with their problems by themselves. I’ll gladly take my freedom! :)

  12. UAShortround says:

    No matter what you think the war was over, you have to admit the south had some great marching music.

    (But I have to say… I’d have HATED to see those Irish coming at me on the other side back then! Say what you will, but the Irish love to fight, drink, and sing- and they’re great at ALL THREE!)

    I don’t think it’s useless to a fight a war of secession. One of the most valuable political freedoms that we can have is secession. Unfortunately the South was fighting for something that was indeed despicable. However, it’s become common knowledge that there is no right of secession in this Country when our country was born out of secession. The reason why the states should be allowed to secede is the same reason a slave owner can’t morally prevent a slave from seceding from a plantation.

  22. pythag123 says:

    English speaking people shouldn’t fight each other at all. Its possible for any English speaking people to get their freedom and preserve their heritage without violence. In fact that seems to be the hall mark of most English speaking countries other then America.

  23. skeeter1188 says:

    they didn’t give there live for nothing the memories of them and what they stood for and therefore they didn’t fight for nothing theres still a chance and there will always be a chance

  24. sparekarma says:

    Actually, you should get your facts straight. It’s true Lincoln cared more about preserving the Union than ending slavery, but even before becoming president he expressed Abolitionist views. The early part of the war was about states rights, but after the battle of Antietam and the Emancipation Proclamation it became a war of about slavery, changing from a political war to a moral one. He most certainly gave more than two hoots about slavery.

  25. LionHeartedHero says:

    @AmericanZeus:

    Whatever, Zeus. It really doesn’t matter what Lincoln said.

    The FACTS are these: the South fought a useless war, many people died because of their rebellion, and the slaves were set free after they were beaten.

    The Southerners tried to protect their way of life — slavery included — and fortunately they lost. Anyway, the Confederates gave their lives for nothing: their way of life was not stolen from them :) )!
