do you really consider virginia a southern state?

Sometimes i think it is.. sometimes i don’t

I’ve lived here all my life in hopewell(south of richmond)
And even tho i know i have a southern accent.. its not as bad as some people.

I get mad when everyone thinks that everybody in the south are rednecks. Im not one bit of a redneck. I hate when people call me a redneck just cause i live in the southern part of virgina or have a southern accent. It’s retarded.
edit, Yeah i hope i didn’t offend anyone saying im not a bit redneck. I see nothing wrong with rednecks i just don’t like being called something im not.

I live in Connecticut and I never thought of Virgina as “the south”. I think of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee and those kinda states when I think of the south. Even if you did live there, it doesnt mean youre a redneck.

There was once alot of agriculture virginia and it was below the mason dixon line. I do consider it a southern state but that doesnt mean you are a redneck. California is a southern state and I dont see rednecks..

Yes, Virginia is a southern state. And it is a little idiotic for people to assume that someone is a redneck because of an accent. Don’t let it get to you, though. Once they get to know you, they will know if you are a redneck or not. I’m a redneck, but more along the lines of what Jeff Foxworthy makes jokes about:P

It depends what part of Virginia.
I am from Northern Virginia and nobody I know here considers it the south.
We don’t have accents, we are 60% of the working force and one of the most ethnically diverse centers of the country.
I think once you leave Northern VA, Virginia becomes more of what people consider ‘the south’.

I think Virginia is kind of split in that aspect. The northern part like fairfax and the DC area and the rest of Virginia. I guess it’s a middle state. How do you like Hopewell? I’m moving to Ft. Lee soon and had asked a question about which is better – Hopewell, Colonial Heights, or Petersburg. If you could help me out that’d be great.
