How Many Of You Think That Flying The Confederate Flag Is An Insult?

June 7, 2010 by

We are living in America, not the old deep South. And dosen’t the confederate flag represent a time and country that dosen’t exist anymore? A time of slavery, a time of war?

The Confederate flag is as foreign and insulting to many as those flying flags from their old countries.
Would anyone be insulted if I fly the flag of Mexico, Guatemala or Canada in my yard?

When they want a another civil war yes but no if they don’t

  2. psycmikev says:

Yes, besides the slavery issue, it was the flag of traitors to our country and the symbol that they used when they tried to destroy us. These “Southern sympathizers” who say it is part of their history and pride, need a reality wake up. It is like saying that the mass murderer in your family should be honored because he brought “fame” to your family.

  3. under_aged_page says:

if it’s on private property I don’t have a problem with it…and if someone knocks on your door and gives you a beat down for flying it, that’s OK with me too…American by birth, Southern by the grace of God

  4. Merry says:

Some of them don’t even know about the whole Civil War thing.

  5. Chugs™ says:

Most of the reason people think the confederate flag is racist are myths, it’s not racist at all.

The Confederate Flag flew over Slavery.
While this is true, the same can be said of the u.S. Flag. The u.S. Flag flew over slavery a full 70 years before the Confederate States of America came into existence. The Confederate Flag never flew over the Ships that brought the slaves over here. To top it all off, the Confederate States of America freed her slaves in 1863; the Federal Union didn’t do it until 1868 with the passage of the 13th amendment.

The Confederate flag was a more egalitarian flag than the Federal flag, in that it had integrated troops within its army. In the Federal army, the black troops served in their own divisions and served under white officers. These troopers saw very little combat; they mostly served in servile roles, serving mostly as laborers and personal servants to the white officers.

The Confederate Army used Blacks both as Soldiers and laborers, there were those white officers in the Confederate Army that had personal servants, but this was not the norm. The Black Soldiers in the Confederate Army were paid the same rate as the White Soldier, they were paid more If they served as laborers. Plus if the Black Confederate soldiers found any Northern weapons or equipment, they could sell them to the Confederate Army for about twice what they were worth on the open market

I have no problem with flying the flag or any flag on private property.

On public property this is another matter. While I concede the flag represents “state rights” to many southerners, I must also concede the flag has a rather negative representation to many others. Public flags are meant to unite us, not divide us.

The association of that flag to outright rebellion against our government, and in particular that rebellion’s advocation of slavery of an entire race of people, means the flag has too many negative connotations to be displayed on public property.

  7. Margrete says:

I quite agree. It is unbelievably offensive to the black community, and is glorifying the good ole days of slavery and segregation, the KKK, lynching…………..

We are a union, the South will just have to over the civil war.

  8. roadhazzards says:

To me it’s less insulting that those who wear any reference to Malcom X or who fly the Mexican Flag.

  9. Corkey says:

It is interesting that you would have both a intolerance to others and to not even understand why the civil war happened. ( States Rights) which we are giving away due to intolerance of others. You don’t like it then don’t look!!!

  10. Cole says:

I don’t like it, but this is America, they have every right to wave any flag they wish. Sad but true.

  11. sillybear says:

i’m highley offended when people fly the confederate flag. it’s insulting because it seems like those people dont care an onuce about every thing that America has been through.
America should be American Flags with the 50 stars only.

  12. Liberal = Idiot says:

To put in bluntly, it’s none of your freaking business what people do with their own property. I don’t like that confederate flag but I despise people like you who attack free speech because they don’t like the message.

Seen on a tee shirt in Detroit:

The blacker the college, the sweeter the knowledge.

The message is racist and makes no sense. However, it is the right of the idiot who is wearing it to do so.

  13. jessica39 says:

well i was born and raised in mississippi and its the only state that still has the rebel flag as the state flag. they actually voted on it and the majority wanted to keep it. so you cant really argue with that, in the end the law is made by the people to reflect what they want, and they wanted it. but this is what i think about it……alot of bad things happened under it, people are still alive today that were tortured by it. now you wouldnt be ok with people wearing swastika’s would you?….having a flag fly with a huge swastika on it?….no it wouldnt be ok would it, alot of people were tortured under that symbol….but alot of people will argue that the original swastika stood for peace and unity etc. but thats not what it stands for anymore is it?…no….no matter what a symbol used to stand for or what you want it to stand for now, doesnt really matter, what matters is the definition of a symbol – a universally understood representation of an idea.
flags are made as symbols to represent a country, its people and the views it stands for. if you are not one of its people, living there, under its law, in its culture, it isnt appropriate to fly. ESPECIALLY if you are attempting to live off the prosperity of another country. if you leave your country under bad terms, if you are fleeing to a better place, then respect that place. if you have such a bad view you your native country but continue to fly its flag over the flag that allowed you to come, then you are spitting in the face of a nation who welcomed you.

  14. DAR says:

No, it is as American as a state flag.

Mind you, the Stars and Bars is a BATTLE flag, so there is an aggressive connotation, slightly, but not unAmerican, and not racist. (Nothing at all wrong with the Bonnie Blue.)

Lincoln didn’t even decide to have the war ‘be about slavery’ until half way through. He wrote papers on it, and you can read them in the Library of Congress.

  15. BeXx says:

Everywhere I go in my neighborhood, it is like the damn UN. I see Puerto Rican flags, Columbian, Mexican, Dominican, etc. I hate when people come to this country and fly the flag of their country and speak their native language. If your country is so great, why did you leave?
However, they do have the right to fly whatever flag they want. They can hang panties on their flagpole if they want. So there really shouldn’t be an issue with someone flying the Confederate flag. And if someone wants to fly a flag with a Swastika, so be it! Even if it is a supposed “evil” symbol, it doesn’t matter! They are allowed to believe what they want to believe. If they hate Jews, they are allowed to hate them! And if they wanna hang a flag on their own property that displays their hatred, they may do so! As long as they are not acting out on these beliefs, they have the freedom to display whatever flag they wish!
And the Confederate flag is not a flag of traitors. The war had practically nothing to do with slavery! And Lincoln was the traitor. He violated the Constitution by suspending habeas corpus and when he took action without Congressional authorization. The South had the right to secede! The Confederate flag is still an American flag, and I’d rather see that flag over some foreign country’s flag any day!!!

  16. YaYam says:

I am very offended by the Confederate flag.

  17. Elizzabeth says:

No I do not find the confederate flag to be an insult at all. Anyone who does , clearly does not know the history of the flag or American history.
No the flag does not stand for slavery. (and no, the civil war was not started over slavery)\

    Chugs: well said.

  18. Micky says:

Not at all,it is a symbol of southern pride and nothing more. Hell I saw a black man sporting a confederate flag lighter once.

  19. aguilar_laurita says:

No I don’t think it is an insult!!! I actually do live in the south! The confederate flag is not about slavery!!! Wow…you need a history lesson!
The confederates had blacks(not slaves) fighting for them too. You don’t know anything about the south(obviously)and what the confederate flag represents!!! I know several black guys/girls who wear Dixie Outfitters clothes that have the confederate flags on them!
How do you get that the confederate flag is as foreign and insulting as Mexican, German, etc. flags? That’s ridiculous!!!
