Most important battles of the Civil War?

I’m a school teacher and I’m curious as to hear other people’s opinions of the most important battles fought during the Civil War. Obviously, the Battle of Gettysburg is number one, but how would you rank them after that?

Just the top three or five should be sufficient. Thank you in advance.

The battle of lexington and concord

  2. Fred C. Dobbs says:

In chronological order. Each of these battles led to severe consequences for the loser.(Victor)

First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas)(CFA)
    Frederickburg(CFA)
    Chancellorsville(CFA)
    Gettysburg(US)
    Vicksburg(US)
    Chickamauga(CFA)
    Atlanta(US)
    Petersburg(US)

Antietam may have been the bloodiest single battle, but neither side gained ground.

1st Bull Run(Manassas) gave the South hope , confidence and the spirit to really wage war. Stonewall Jackson’s debut.
Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville gave the South the momentum to invade the North, which led to Gettysburg. Gettysburg started the end of the Northern Army of Virginia and ended the Southern offensive in to the North. Vicksburg won the war in the West. Chickamauga stopped the Union advance into the deep south and prolonged the war in the South. Atlanta ended the war in the South. Petersburg was the final blow to Lee’s Armies, leading to Appomattox.

Had any of these battles gone the other way, the course of the war would have changed.

Antietam, Fredricksburg, Siege Of Vicksburg, Siege of Peterburg.
