The Egyptian national soccer team, also known as The Pharaohs, is the reigning African Cup of Nations champions. They have held this title since 2006. They have always been found to be underdogs in these champions as compared to other African nations that boast of having premier players playing in major leagues abroad. In fact, if you analyze the national team properly, it is made up of players who mostly play in the local leagues and mainly come from either El Zamalek or Al-Ahly. This is one of the first African national soccer teams that do not believe in big names that rule major leagues in Europe. They have a unique style of play where seems everyone can read each others mind and they all work together towards the same purpose which is to win. This is why they are 6 time African Cup of nations champions.

This was displayed very well at the MTN African Cup of Nations of 2008 held in Ghana where in the finals; they were up against a very promising Cameroonian side. A blunder by the very experienced Rigobert Song led Egypt to raise the cup with a 1-0 win over the indomitable lions of Cameroon. In fact, these 2 teams had been drawn in the same group and Egypt had handed them a 4-2 defeat during the group matches. Egypt then went on to beat Sudan 3-0 and then drew with Zambia. In the quarter finals, Egypt was able to defeat Angola 2-1 and then went on to defeat the great Ivorians by 4-1. In short, their style of play that Egypt has does not depend on how good the quality of a player is.

If you analyze most African teams properly, you will find that most of their attacks will be…read the complete article and others here.

The United Stated defeated on Wednesday the No.1 team Spain, in the semifinals for the Confederations Cup, 2-0, in a stunning match that left everybody breathless. The probabilities of the Americans beating the Spaniards where minimum since the last 3 performances of the US team have not been the best. They lost their first two games in the Confederations Cup, the first one against Italy and the second one against the defending champion Brazil. This is one of the biggest defeats in football history; Spain had a 35-game unbeaten streak record from December 1993 to January 1996, and currently had the international record of 15 straight wins, but that streak went away in a very unlikely way against the United States this Wednesday in the Confederations Cup semifinals. Since the beginning of the game, the United States team was leading the game. Their performance was outstanding, leaving aside what they did in the last 3 games except for the game against Egypt, which they won as well. The first goal came at minute 27th when Davies started a play and threw the ball to Dempsey and then he passed over to Jozy Altidore, who struggled a little against Capdevila, he over passed him and fired a shot from the penalty area and though goalkeeper Iker Casillas touched the ball, it was not enough and the ball went in. The second goal was a play started by Captain Landon Donovan, who made a pass to Clint Dempsey who slipped the ball to pass Casillas for the second and last goal of the game. “It’s exciting, a great team effort. To beat an amazing team like Spain and make the final, it’s big,” U.S. coach Bob Bradley said. “We played as hard as we could and that’s what it took. Every guy contributed, so it’s a very good feeling.” The United States now will have to face South Africa or the defending Champion, Brazil and will have three full days to recover some energy and face the final that will be held next Sunday. This is the first time ever that the US team gets to the final of a FIFA tournament. For their part, Spain played in a very disappointing way, much unexpected due to the level of game that they have in Europe, especially in Spain. Most of the people around the world may have thought that it was almost certain that Spain would be in the final, but at the end it was a surprising US team, very solid and accurate in every part of the game, they really deserved the victory. For his part coach Vicente del Bosque expressed that they are not used to lose a game but that is something that could happen. He also said that the United States was a great rival and that in the match they were better than them. The United States will be missing midfielder Michael Bradley, who received a red card for a tackle in 87th minute and will not be in the final next Sunday. The main goal right now for the US team is to win the final, and to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, if they keep playing as they did on Wednesday, they could certainly accomplish it.

After three great victories to Iraq, New Zealand and South Africa, the Spanish team was one of the favorites to win the Confederations Cup, but the 2-0 loss they suffered in the semi-finals to United States changed the whole picture for the team headed by Vicente Del Bosque, which had no other choice but to fight for third a place, whereas Brazil and USA were the ones that moved to the grand final. Not reaching the final seemed to have affected the Spaniards’ encouragement, which came to the Confederations Cup as the most recent European champions, having won the EURO 2008. No doubt the loss in the semis was not a great motivator for a team like Spain, which had an amazing debut in South Africa with a crushing 5-0 over New Zealand. Being the favorite was not a very useful, because the level of football of some of their opponents at the tournament was clearly inferior and this filled them with uncertainty regarding their true level. The discomfort of Spain was clear at the meeting before the United States, where some defensive errors and unwise changes of Del Bosque led them to the defeat. In the fixture for third place, which Spain won with a final score of 3-2, it was actually the South Africa team which started dominating the game, whereas their opponents lacked the speed that the host team showed from the start. The match started with both teams attacking each other directly in the goal area, which doubled the work of the defense and goalkeepers of both teams. The atmosphere of the first part remained charged with dangerous and exciting game action that at times threatened with opening the score at any moment. Nevertheless, the goals were left for the second part of the match, in which some successful changes were made on both the South Africans and Spaniards. These changes gave a turn to the meeting, which became faster and was full of thrilling plays that had both Iker Casillas and Khun Itumeleng on constant alert. From Spain, the most notorious and successful change was the entrance of Daniel Guiza, who came to replace Fernando Torres, while South Africa found a good balance by replacing Steven Pienaar with Katlego Mphela, who was responsible for opening the scoring after 73 minutes to take advantage of an error from the defense Alvaro Arbeloa, who did not cover his area well and allowed Mphela to pass and throw a shot that went straight to the bottom of Casillas’ goal. Ready to get the third position of the Confederations Cup, the Spaniards decided not to be intimidated by the pressure from their opponents and it was then when Guiza appeared to score a goal at minute 87, an action that was repeated just a minute later and put the score 2-1 in favour of Spain and made Guiza to became the figure of the Europe champions. When everything seemed to go in favour of the Spaniards, Mphela appeared again tying the score at 2-2 at the 90th so the game had to be defined in extra time. Spain faced its opponents almost without force and at minute 103, Xavi Alonso marked the goal that gave a deserved victory.

Brazil defeated a very weak United States team on Thursday at the Confederations Cup and moved closer to be in the semifinals, where Spain has a spot already. The United States have lost the two games they have played so far in the competition; the first one against Italy and the second one against Brazil, with a performance that left a lot to be desired and many questions as well since up to this moment they got no points and no probabilities of moving forward in the tournament. Felipe Melo opened up the score at the seventh minute when Maicon made a free kick and he completed the whole play; then at minute 20’ Robinho put the score 2-0 making a very comfortable half- time break for the Brazilians that came back in the second half with a lot more to show and at minute 62’ Maicon added the third goal that assured the victory to the carioca team. The US team needed desperately to win over Brazil. This was something that they have never done before, but at the minimum they needed a draw to stay alive in the Confederations Cup. Now everything is uncertain and everything indicates that they will come back home empty-handed. They will face Egypt on Sunday but even if they win, it will not be enough if previously Italy wins over Egypt on Thursday. The Confederations Cup has not been a good tournament for the Americans; they had a bad start with Italy on Monday on the opening game that ended 3-1, where they ended up the game with 10 men, and the same thing happened in the game with Brazil when midfielder Sacha Kljestan made a foul to Ramires in minute 57’, giving even more opportunities to Brazil with the open spots that where left when Kljestan got expulsed. The US team was missing the defenders Carlos Bocanegra, Steve Cherundolo and Frankie Hejduk due to injuries, making their defense weaker. Captain Landon Donovan did everything that he could but the opportunities were not there for him or the team. He tried to create some plays but they were not concreted. Brazil, for its part, was a very solid rival. The performances of all of its players were very remarkable, including Kaka, Robinho and Felipe Melo. Their first game against Egypt was kind of difficult to win for them and it actually almost ended up with a 3-3 draw, before a penalty kick by Kaká in the last minute of the game gave the victory to the South Americans. Moreover, the carioca team is also coming from qualifying round for the World Cup with two victories against Paraguay and Uruguay, and they are the defending champions of the Confederations Cup. Kaka expressed that this is a very good experience and added that “Playing in the Confederations Cup is a great opportunity ahead of the 2010 World Cup, and as long as we remain strong during the difficult periods, like against Egypt, I think we’ll be on the right track. In a short tournament with decisive matches, that’s all that matters” he said. The six points that Brazil has so far are putting them in the first place of group B and we will have to wait and see what happens between Egypt and Italy.

The five-time World Cup champion, Brazil, beat USA in an incredible way, after being down 2-0 in the first half. However, the experienced team of Brazil came back with all they got to even the game and then obtained the victory in the final minutes.

Both teams were criticized for their lack of performance in different parts of the tournament; first it was USA which had a very poor start in the cup, losing the first two matches, and many didn’t even though that they could reach the final. However, they proved everyone that they could compete with the big teams when they beat the European champion Spain in the semifinals. For its part, the defending champion Brazil had a very good start, but then had a very poor game against South Africa in the semifinals, being outplayed by the host team and barely earning the pass to the final with a late goal for a 1-0.

In the final, at the beginning of the match Brazil did not have opportunities in the offense due to the great defense that USA was approaching with the help of his great goalkeeper Tim Howard, whereas USA, in hands of Landon Donovan, got several opportunities to score. At minute 10, a good play of Jonathan Spector, who ran into the right side and sent a low cross into the area which Clint Dempsey accurately touched with his right leg to send the ball straight to the goal, opening the score for USA.

The Brazilians kept trying to find the way to their offense but they didn’t seem to find them. Just 17 minutes later from the opener goal, the Americans astonished their opponents again when the midfielder Landon Donovan got the ball, ran up the middle, passed to Charlie Davies and then asked the ball back from his teammate to beat the Brazilian goalkeeper and put the score 2-0.

Everyone was surprised for the supremacy of the Americans in the first half, but in the second half things completely changed for them.

The Brazilians entered with aggressiveness and confidence and in the first minute of the second half Luis Fabiano opened the score after turning and shooting in great way with a pass of Ramires. After that, Brazil kept pushing to get another goal, whereas USA kept fighting in defense and even Howard got to work hard to save some close opportunities from the Samba boys.

Nevertheless at minute 74th, Luis Fabiano scored again after a rebounded kick in the crossbar by Robinho to tie the game 2-2. The game continued in the same pace; Brazil attacking and USA defending but a corner kick for Brazil with just 6 minutes left, gave the Brazilians the victory after captain Lucio headed the ball, beating goalkeeper Tim Howard.

After that goal, the Brazilians just waited for the referee to announce the end of match to celebrate, jumping with joy knowing that they were once again champions of the Confederations Cup and their comeback in the game was a delight. On the other hand, the Americans looked very disappointed and they couldn’t believe that their effort wasn’t enough for the victory.

Landon Donovan expressed his frustration for losing after being so close, but he also recognized the value of his team’s achievement. “This is a massive learning experience. You always hope to do the most learning when you win, but you probably learn more by losing. If we’re smart and we take what we should from this game, we can progress. And that’s what we’re trying to do,” said Donovan.

Moreover for Brazil this means a great step to return as a force in the world football and they (the players, coaches and followers) hope they can get better by learning from some of the mistakes committed during this tournament, so they can be ready for the World Cup tournament next year.

The best of lucks for these two countries in their qualification games and we hope they could bring great football to the biggest event of all, the South Africa World Cup 2010.

The Fifa Confederations Cup is drawing in near and there is no better place for it to be held than in the beautiful continent of Africa. So, are you ready for this??? The 8 greatest national soccer teams arrive in South Africa in June as preparation of the main event to be held in 2010 – Fifa world cup in South Africa. The eight so called “mighty” teams are South Africa (host nation), Egypt (winners of 2008 African cup of nations), Italy (current world cup winners), Brazil (Copa America winners), Iraq (AFC Asian cup winners), Spain (current Euro cup winners), New Zealand (OFC Nations cup winners) and USA (CONCACAF Gold cup winners). All this and more all getting down in Africa!!

Then check this out: Group A has South Africa, Iraq, New Zealand and Spain!! Well this group doesn’t look as bad. It’s still a tricky one to call but my money is on Spain and definitely South Africa to go into the next round!! But that’s just my call…Who will make it? Who will not?? Please feel free and leave a comment on the team you bet will win this group. Group B could be referred to as the group of “death’ with Brazil, Egypt and Italy. As you may know, Brazil has beat Italy in the world cup before, Italy is the current world cup holder and Egypt are the current African Cup of Nations holders. This is a group what checking out. My money is on Italy and Brazil but yet again you can have your say. Wait a minute!! There’s something worth checking here: the United States and Iraq are……read the complete article and more More information on the http://fifa-confederations-cup-soccer-teams.blogspot.com“>Fifa Confederations Cup 2009 here.

As the days go by, we seem to be getting ever so close to the Fifa Confederations Cup of 2009. Soon, the UEFA Champions leagues and all the other leagues will be over and football lovers will be waiting for the next big soccer tournament for 2009. As we prepare for this, here are some players that you may want to check out:

The Brazilian national team will be fully represented at the confederations cup in South Africa. For any soccer lovers, you know how excited you get and sometimes begin to drool when the likes of Kaka, Ronaldinho, Adriano and Robinho get the ball on their feet. These are some of the players worth checking out at the confederations cup in 2009. The whole Brazilian squad is quite impressive from the defensive player to the attack minded strikers. Some of the big names in world soccer that will be included in this team are the likes of Julio Baptista, Elano, Lucio, Maicon and the young talents that we would like to see would be Pato, Anderson (Man Utd) and Marcelo. Trying to analyze each player on their own is a whole web page on its own but here are some key names to watch out for.

After the many rumors of being bought by Man City, Kaka has to be one of the most talented players in the soccer world today. His skill on the ball, the quick touches and the great finishes that he displays are some of the things we look forward to see in the Confederations Cup and also in the World Cup, that’s if they qualify (it’s quite obvious they have a chance of doing so). Having 2 other great soccer players in the likes of Robinho and Ronaldinho alongside him, we expect that some defenders will be doing more of dancing on the pitch rather than…read the complete article and others here.

The samba boys, as they are well known as, are the current Fifa Confederations Cup holders and are currently ranked 5th according to Fifa rankings. Brazilian football is said to be one of the most creative and most exquisite football you will ever watch. A famous quote on football goes as follows “The English created it, the Brazilians perfected it. How true! These samba boys are so creative and talented that words themselves seem to be an understatement to what the do on the pitch. In every single competition or even friendly match they participate in, there has to be someone who comes out with a spout of brilliance. They are a very impressive side when it comes to ball control, speed and finishing. It has been found out that whenever Brazil is playing, no matter how much you love your team, you just hope and pray that no much humiliation will be done. Some of the things these boys do on the field can make you feel pity for your own country. They may not win, but their foot display will definitely remain in your mind for a long time. They are a force to reckon with in this confederations cup and would definitely be a team worth checking out in the Fifa world cup in South Africa. Their style of play is mixture of a lot and I mean a lot of great footwork, aided by speed and perfect finishing. Experience may not be as much but the above mentioned qualities do a perfect cover up for this.

With some of the greatest names in the world of football coming from this country, it is quite hard to put a starting 11 but let me try:…read the complete article and others here.

The Italian national football team is the current world cup champions and will be featuring in the Confederations Cup of 2009. It is currently ranked 4th in the world by Fifa. They beat France at the 2006 world cup which ended with the dramatic head butt by the veteran footballer, Zinedine Zidane, on Materrazi. Personally, I believe France would have lifted the trophy but penalties can make the game go either way. They were also quite impressive in the Euro cup. They are a force to reckon with in this confederations cup and would definitely be a team worth checking out as they defend their title in the Fifa world cup in South Africa. There style of mostly based on the experience. The average age of the national team players is about 30 so you can imagine all that experience. But skill and speed is, in my opinion, what they lack.

From the current form of its players, the ideal starting 11 for Italy would be: Buffon (in goal), Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Gamberini and Dossena in defence, De Rossi, Aquilani, Del Piero, Pirlo in midfield and Luca Toni and Gilardino in striking. Since the whole team carries with it experience, the strength of the team is well balanced throughout the positions. Other names that could make headlines are Perotta, Di Natale, Camoranesi and others (add a comment at the end of this post to who or what you think will work). As observed in the world cup of 2009, Italy can do wonders. They may not have the speed and creativity that comes with many current sides, but they definately have the heart to win and the experience is an added advantage. One player I really like is the man Gatuzzo. He is a mean looking beast and meeting him on the pitch, I would guess, would be worse. I remember during the 2006-2007 UEFA champions league where he…read the complete article and others here.
