Probably the most famous battle was Gettysburg. July 1st through July 3rd of 1863, the Union and Confederate Armies converged on Gettysburg, PA. Over 100,000 men fought in the fields and hills of Gettysburg. 50,000 men died there. A lot of them were buried in mass graves that were separated by the Army they fought for. July 4th the Confederate Army retreated out of the area, which gave the Union Army victory. Some say that this battle was the turning point for the Union Army which later won the war. Of course in November of that year President Lincoln visited Gettysburg to dedicate the battle field and burial site. He gave one of the most famous speeches a president has ever given. “The Gettysburg Address”.
