Why do people make fun of southern accents?

What’s wrong with having a southern accent? :\
All over youtube, I see comments like “Stupid redneck” and “Southerns sound retarded”.
I didn’t grow up in the south, so I don’t have an accent. BUT I have many friends who do have southern accents and they have to put up with crap all the time.
When I hear a Southern accent, I think of manners for some reason. Of course if some trash comes out of the person’s mouth, of course I’m going to think unflattering thoughts. But I find the accent itself soothing, like the guy would open the door for me, or a woman would say, “Come sit, I just made cookies!” And then we’d gossip.

well i’m from the north and i’ll admit when i went to Florida i found the accents of some people kinda funny. but i don’t make fun of them..that’s pretty immature.
They sound funny.
ive never been put down for my southern accent. everybody seems to love it.
People are just jellous that they can’t sound like us.
